During the colder seasons, your skin can become dehydrated and appear dull and dry. We want to help you keep your healthy-looking glow this winter, so we have outlined some key causes of dry winter skin and how you can help prevent it and keep dry, cracked skin at bay.

Why Should You Change Your Skin Routine In The Winter?

Winter skin is flaky, dry and it can begin to feel rough to the touch. It can also become red, irritated and very itchy. Dry skin can develop on any area of the body, but it is especially common on the face during winter.

When your skin loses moisture, it becomes dehydrated and lacks the water levels that are needed in order for it to function properly. If you do not tend to dry skin, you can develop a skin condition known as ‘winter rash’ - so it is best to start a winter skincare regime as soon as the seasons start to change.

What Winter Skincare Routine Should I Follow?

There are so many skincare routines that you can take up, but the one that will suit you most depends entirely on your skin type - what’s right for one isn't always right for another.

As a rule of thumb, we suggest following the below routine with products that suit your skin type best:

Cleanse, Tone and Moisturise.

Step 1 - Switch Up Your Facial Cleanser
With the harsher weather, you should take a gentler approach to your skincare regime. You can start with swapping your facial cleanser. You should opt for a soap-free and non-lathering one as they tend to have a more natural pH balance and are far less likely to dry out your skin.

Step 2 - Exfoliate, Exfoliate, EXFOLIATE!
Your skin tends to become duller during cold seasons, so introducing exfoliation into your skincare regime this winter will most certainly help you keep your skin glowing. Be sure not to exfoliate too vigorously, as your skin is much more sensitive and tender in the winter and if you exfoliate too harshly, broken skin and veins can appear on your face! To lighten the exfoliation stage, try an oil-based scrub as this has the benefits of exfoliation with the added bonus of rehydrating the skin.

Step 3 - Change Your Moisturiser
In colder months, it is so important to moisturise the skin. If you already suffer from dry skin, or dry patches of skin throughout the year, it is even more important to keep your skin hydrated in the winter months. Skin produces fewer oils throughout the winter, so introducing a heavier moisturizer is highly recommended to ensure your skin stays hydrated.

If you suffer from skin conditions such as Eczema, Psoriasis, Rosacea or Dermatitis it may be a little more difficult finding a regime which suits your requirements.
